Kannur International Airport was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu on December 9, 2018. Chief guests jointly flagged off the first flight, Air India Express from Kannur to Abu Dhabi. It has been built in a Public Private Partnership model(PPP) under KIAL. The IATA code of the airport is CNN, which is received in July 2017. CNN is the abbreviation of Cannanore, the anglicized name of Kannur. KIAL is the fourth international airport in Kerala and Kerala is the only state in the country to have four international airports with the others at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode.
Kannur airport is the second greenfield airport after Kochi International Airport and it also received a LEED gold rating for its energy and environment conservation. The airport will be able to handle 2,000 passengers at a time. KIAL is expected to change the face of north Kerala in areas like tourism and business activities, especially handloom, textiles and floriculture. Standing to gain through this new airport would be popular tourist destinations in the vicinity such as Coorg and Mysore in Karnataka, besides the hilly districts of Kerala like Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod.
